Gentlemen,
We
have just heard that Phillip Clegg has died, and I’m passing on the information
to you.
My records
are rather scanty, but here’s one from 1950, with Phillip marked as #4 in the
back row,
My
only information on Phillip was gathered about 8-10 years ago, and I reproduced
his email to me precisely as I received it, into the MSB Database. Here’s what
he said at that time:
"All seems to be correct with respect to my particulars on
your database so far as I can see, except that so far as I am aware, you may
not have me listed as having commenced as a boarder at MSB (along with David de
Castro and Quentin Scott) during the first term of 1944 when I was still seven
years of age, having been born on, 6 November 1936, thus having been somewhat
under the age permitted at point of time of commencement of the first term,
although I did turn eight later on during the same year on, 6 November.
I only mention it as I seem to recall not
being included amongst those that had commenced at the outset of the first
boarder intake which took place in that year.
Both David and myself recall that at the
time, we youngsters had slept in the building at the foot of the ramp that
leads up to the College rather than in the College itself.
We were so young at the time that I recall
that on the first night one of the lads had 'peed' his bed.
"Although I read everything that comes
up on your website I don't tend to get involved in the 'to and fro' of it as
much as might the lads that arrived much later on than myself.
However David, although having commenced at
the same time as myself does always seem to be right in the middle of
everything going on, and seems to be very current with everything going on,
possibly as he had stayed on at MSB much later on than myself and perhaps quite
naturally appears to be familiar with all that came later on after my
departure.
"Once again I'd like to thank you for
all of the good work that you do, for which I am certain that we are all very
grateful indeed."
Phillip Clegg.

Thanks, Nigel,
I have
forwarded this to Neil Baxter in the hope he may be inspired to add something
more biographical notes.
I have
already asked him for a copy of any eulogy or memorial programme after the
funeral on 30 May.
Best,
Don

Yes Nigel, Don,
Ladislao and Hugh,
As
Nigel shared, Hugh answered our wish by providing the names of the 'Boys' on
the team.
So
Ladislao has some more information for his newsletter, although this one is sad
with the passing of Phillip.
I will
work on the MSB Abbey School Database and send to you all to see if we have all
the latest entries.
Blessings
to all.....

Thanks for your kind
comments, Hugh, and also for your identification of the boys seen in the
photograph of the 1950 MSB Football team.
Actually,
I was HOPING that one of you older guys would have correctly identified the
names, and you’ve done the job.
We hit
pay-dirt.
Many
thanks for that!
I’m
sure that Ladislao, Don Mitchell and Kazim will be happy to add this new info
to our history of those days 70 years ago.
Keep
well, and with love to the family.

Hello Nigel;
Sorry
to hear about Philip Clegg's passing.
He was
older than me but we were good friends through horse racing - he was an artist
and drew horses beautifully.
Re the
photo of the 1950 football team, I can give you the details since I am in the
middle with the trophy (#7).
#01 - Eugene Lopez (
day boy);
#02 - Ian Shoul from
Antigua. Had a younger brother Conrad not in picture;
#03 - John Lopes
from Guyana. Had a younger brother Benedict. I think John became a
seminarian but not sure.
#04- Philip Clegg;
#05 - McKenzie Cook
(day boy);
#06 - Edward
Xavier;
#07- Hugh Henderson
(aged 10/11).
#08 - Edward Garcia
(day boy who was better known for opening the bowling for the cricket
team);
#09 - Earle Kayne
who was one of my best friends. He married a sister of Malcolm
#10 - Stephen Shoul
also from Antigua but if I remember well, he was actually the uncle of Ian and
Conrad though the same age.
#11- Bruce Marquez.
I was
the captain of the team but how and why I don't know given the size of the
others compared with mine!
Maybe
I was simply a brilliant footballer!!
Boyack,
and has lived in Calgary, Alberta "forever"
Okay....my
brain is dead after such an effort to identify people in a photo taken 70 years
ago.
Hopefully
older readers will be able to remember them.
All
the best and God bless.
Hugh Henderson
(I agree on the
efforts, although I started later, EDITOR)
=====------------------------------------------------===
I’m
inviting any of you who would like to say something, anything at all, about
your memories of Phillip.
Please
add your comments below.
BTW,
his last known address was: Heatherset Villa,, 8 Montpelier Terrace, Brighton,
East Sussex, BN1 3DF. UK
I’ve
googled the address, and there are some very nice photographs of an elegant
home in East Sussex.
It
would appear that Philip must have lived there:
May
his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Thank
you for info re. passing of my MSB alumnus Phillip Clegg.
I
contacted him once when he lived in Australia and notified him that Leary and
Richard O'Connor also lived there at that time.
I had
not seen the photo of the 1950 Football team before-it certainly brought back
many memories.
Again
thanks for sending me the info, albeit sad.

Confused I am, Don.
Has
Phillip Clegg died?
I see
the he sent out an email to you on May 25th - just 2 days ago. So this must
have been rather sudden. Please let me know what’s going on here.

Dear Don,
Thank
you for your kind message. Phillip's funeral is on Friday the 31st May and we
are still working on the eulogy but will send a copy after the funeral.
Phillip
was last month in the process of marketing for sale his approximately 17 acres
of land in the Ward of Valencia in Trinidad so it is very sad that he was not
able to see that through.
If you
know anybody who might be interested in the land do please contact me.
Kind regards. Neil
