Circular No 930

Newsletter for alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 31 of August 2019 No. 930
------------------------------------------------
Dear friends,
In this issue I wanted you to know that one of the Oldboys living in Margarita is seriously ill.
He has thanked the ASAA for the collaboration that he is about to receive,
The medication and the money are in the hands of Adolfo Aumaitre, who kindly brought it over from Trinidad some months back.
Hopefully Adolfo is going to Maturin for the process of handing over the medicine, goods.

Our site has had its ups n downs last year.  We hope to pick up where we left off.
We dedicated so much to our Venezuelan assistance it took away some of our normal communications.
The highlight of last year is the older boys arranged and had a successful reunion without us the younger brothers for once that was great
Hope it continues however we the younger ones must keep up the wonderful relationship we have established since Sir Ladislao Kertesz, Sir Nigel Boos & Sir Don Mitchell their hard work we must continue.
We are a strong old boys club.  So, feel proud to be part of history.
One Luv One Brotherhood.
The last watch is gone Sir Fr. Augustine so we are it now.
We support and best wishes go out to Sir Fr Abbot, keeper of our Castle. Long Live The Mount.

Don,
Thanks for this note.  I was unaware that Shis had taken over control of the MSB dB, and you’re so right.
Instead of referring any notes I might have on the matter to Kaz, and with all due respect to him for his agreement to take over control of the dB after I could no longer do it,
I’ll now instead refer these notes to Shis, ‘cos he’s de man!
So, Shis - here’s the dope:
In 1958 or thereabouts, Peter Dribas came from Surinam to the monastery at MSB as a “late vocation” and was housed in the section of the monastery which we later called the “Major Seminary”.
He was friendly with Gerard and Thijs Koenraadt, who were then Junior Seminarians at the “Minor Seminary" within the monastery proper.
On his assumption as a seminarian, he apparently took the name “Ignatius” in honour of St. Ignatius (of Loyola? - founder of the Jesuits).
He represented the Abbey School at football competitions, and his mighty right foot could blast the ball from one goal-post right down-field to the opposing goal.
He left MSB and immigrated to the Netherlands where he perhaps joined another Dutch monastery for a period of 1-2 years before the ceased his studies for the priesthood and was married.
He had 2 daughters, who are now in touch with Jan Koenraadt in Holland.
Ignatius became a Deacon for the Cathedral in Utrecht, and eventually he died in 2014.
Would you please add these notes to the dataBase, since it seems that my efforts to do so are bearing no fruit?
Thanks, everyone.
Nigel

Hi, Nigel,
I think you may want to reach out to George.
You delegated the database to Kazim about a year ago, and then Kazim delegated it to George who volunteered some months ago.
George has already circulated several updates, the last I believe dated 23 June.
Until you resume control of the database, I will assume that George's is the definitive version.
I'm sure you don't want two, far less three, persons issuing independently updated versions, as then you will never know if any of them is complete.
Best,
Don

Gentlemen,
Thank you for the many inputs you’ve sent me, as I try to solve the question of Peter Draaibas.
I’m sure that his two daughters will be thrilled to know that their dad was remembered by so many of us.
I’ve amended my version of the MSB dB to try to include your notes, and I include my version here for anyone who would care to have a look. The data base is in the Web page of The Abbey School.

Yes Nigel, as Don shared,
I kindly asked George to administrate the MSB Database for now as I am attending to some other matters at the moment.
And to give full attention to the database, it would be better for someone else at this point in time to assume leadership duties.
George kindly consented to run things and keep me up-to-date with updates so we are on the same page.
I am sorry I did not share this interim support of the database with you Nigel.
We all know full well the professionalism George brings to anything he does, and he will surely continue to do us proud.
So, I can safely say with respect to the MSB Database, we are in safe and capable hands with George at the helm.
Thank you Ladislao, Don, Nigel and George.
Guys please continue to send me info as before as I am still monitoring things as before, just not documenting details that are being shared around and about.
Blessings to all......Kaz

Jorge
Thanks for your note. I pray for Venezuela and all Venezuelans every day. It hurts me a lot to hear, read and see all that you are going through there.
I will pass your note to my family and friends who have contributed to help them.
Those who have helped most of all are our brothers in Trinidad at the ASAA, Abbey School Alumni Association. My personal part has been very small compared to what our brothers have done in Trinidad. With your permission I would like to share your note with the ASAA.
God bless you,

Circular No 929

Caracas, 24 of August 2019 No. 929
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
I know that many of you would like to cooperate with your classmates, Oldboys who are in financial difficulties, to subsist here in Venezuela.
Also do not forget the Newsletter that needs funds to keep on going, hopefully until the No. 1000 issue.
Don has definitive plans to post the No.1000 issue on the Blog.
In this issue Andres Larsen and I try to clarify the method of sending your donation. This is the formula to send money to Venezuela (September 2019), Maybe things will change but this is it.
The normal Bank transfer method costs 15 usd. So read on for a better way and it is economical and direct.
Using Western Union International and its competitor Moneygram cash.
These only ask for the name of the recipient and the city, country.

Hello Laszlo,
Brief overview of Western Union International and its competitor Moneygram cash transfer mechanisms.
Any money transferred to Venezuela by these Money transfer companies are received here in Venezuela by their respective exclusive local competing franchisees Casa de Cambio Zoom and Italcambio in Venezuela
These local franchise pay the full amount that was given abroad where the sending fees are included or was payed by remitter at source after having made direct sending fee estimates at Western Union International or Moneygram Agent Location abroad (usually on the order of USD.5.00 per cash transfer transaction.
Currently until further notice Western Union International is doing no cash transfers from North America to Venezuela but yes from all other countries worldwide.
Its competitor Moneygram currently has no restrictions in place for doing cash transfers from North America as well as all other countries worldwide to Venezuela.
NOTE THE FOLLOWING: It is critically important with these cash transfer mechanisms:
In all cases, the recipient must take their personal R.I.F.  to have their account registered, it ia a one time only requirement.
In the case of Western Union International, the cash transfer sender HAS to provide the receiver here with the Western Union International 10-digit Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) for online tracking and notification to Casa de Cambio Zoom here.
In the case of Moneygram, the cash transfer sender HAS to provide the receiver here with the Moneygram 8-digit reference number for online tracking and notification to Italcambio here.
As a personal reference, Attila Gyuris has already sent me a cash transfer from Quito, Ecuador via Western Union International for USD.30.00 with a remittance fee of USD.5.00 (if I remember correctly) so these mechanisms do work.
Both Western Union International as well as its competitor Moneygram have online remittance mechanisms but in this case being an absolute digital illiterate, I am not knowledgeable as these are totally unfamiliar to me.
In any case, both Casa de Cambio Zoom as well as Italcambio at their local Agent Locations explain their processing procedures for incoming cash transfers in great detail, so the potential receivers here are advised to personally go these Agent Locations first before contacting their cash transfer senders abroad.
For our MSB Old Boys in Ciudad Bolivar, Maturin, Tucupita, Caripe, Anaco, El Tigre and Margarita , it is a valid option.
Best regards,
Andrés Larsen

Hello Laszlo,
On receipt here locally of the cash transfers, also termed money transfers, Casa de Cambio Zoom as well as its competitor Italcambio pay out the local currency equivalent at our local DICOM exchange rate within three (3) bank working days.
Those receivers here who happen to have their bank accounts with Banco Provincial have the added advantage that Zoom has its Group concentration account with Banco Provincial, thereby enabling Zoom to pay out the received cash transfer on the same date it is received.
Italcambio on the other hand takes the three (3) bank working days to pay the local currency equivalents for the received cash transfers.
The Agent Locations both competing currency exchange offices have here, it looks as if Casa de Cambio Zoom has a better set of Agent Locations in Ciudad Bolivar, Maturin, Anaco, Porlamar than what Italcambio has to offer in those locations.
Hopefully this information is of use to our MSB Old Boys there.
Best regards,
Andrés Larsen
-------------------------------------
Hello Laszlo,
Additional to our earlier phone and e-mail exchange some further information on receiver procedures locally.
The receiver on being notified by the sender preferably via e-mail with scanned copy of the cash transfer, in order to be able to receive it, has to personally go to the local currency exchange office, to register his personal data specifying local Identity Card number, local Taxpayer number as well as local bank and bank account number. The receiver should of course also take the scanned copy of the cash transfer from abroad with him which in the case of Western Union International specifies its 10-digit Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) and in the case of Moneygram specifies its 8-digit cash transfer reference number.
As our MSB Old Boys are in Ciudad Bolivar, Maturin, Tucupita, Caripe, Anaco, El Tigre and Margarita, they first should consult the respective websites of Casa de Cambio Zoom (exclusive local franchisee of Western Union International) and its competitor Italcambio (exclusive local franchisee of Moneygram) to verify if these 2 local currency exchange offices do have Agent Locations of theirs in Ciudad Bolivar, Maturin, Tucupita, Caripe, Anaco, El Tigre and Margarita.
Both Casa de Cambio Zoom as well as Italcambio charge local processing fees on the order of 4% to 5% per transaction on the cash transfers respectively received from Western Union International and Moneygram.
General Information
·                     Central Banco Universal will not offer the Western Union Money Transfer service in Venezuela until further notice.
·                     Transactions recorded by account "Casos Estudiantes y Especiales" can have higher principal amounts since CADIVI approves them for students and other exceptional cases.
·                     Free Telephone Notification is available upon request.
·                     Multiple same sender, same day, same destination, different receiver transfers allowed.
Best regards to all MSB Old Boys,
Andrés Larsen

Subject: ABBEY SCHOOL MEMORABILIA- LEGACY PHOTO & POSTCARD
Hi Don and Ladislao
Found this postcard from 1958 when going through some of my mother’s stuff while visiting my sister last week.
Forgot that this famous postcard existed.  I refer to the Bazaar we had in May 1958; one of the many fund raising efforts held through the years.  As I recall this one was held down the field.
Another factoid: postcard was sent from Trinidad on the 13th and received in Maracay on the 16th.   3 days; amazing!!
Here is the translation from Polish to English:

Dearest Mom
I received your last letter today.
In this photo you can see our classrooms, dormitory, and other stuff.
As you know, yesterday we had a Bazaar.  It was great and we had lots of fun and things to do.
We have begun to play marbles again.
Kisses for everyone,
Yurek
Best Wishes,
George
